Anson Wellington has been tearing up the streets and parks in New York City for a while now.  He's also been making headlines and landing video spots in all of the latest mountain bike films.  If you've seen any photos or videos of Anson on his bike, then you know he's one of the few big wheelers carrying the sport into the streets and pushing the limits on a mountain bike.  Expect to see a whole lot more of Anson in the future, as he fully recovers from his latest injury.

Tell us a little about yourself:
Anson Wellington, Deuce Four and Trini to da bone.

Sponsors:
Brooklyn Machine Works, Atomlab, Lizard Skins, Tioga Tires, and Idun Clothing.

How would you describe your riding style?
That’s a hard question... I’ll say raw but smooth.

Describe your bike setup:
24 inch wheels, no brakes, with a slammed, rock-hard Marzocchi Bomber

How and when did you get into riding?
The first time I ever rode a bike was on a sketchy dirt track in Trinidad and I busted my ass. My friends just started laughing. For some strange reason, I always loved bikes after that.

What's your favorite trick?
It’s hard to say, but, tables and tuck no-handers are fun.

Do you ride BMX at all?
I did but not anymore. I want to get one again; they’re so small and easy to flick around--like a skinny girl with a fatty.

Are you into riding competitions?
Sometimes, it depends on how my riding’s going. If I feel strong and I’m not hurtin’, I’ll go throw myself off some ramps. But I like filming more, because the most fulfilling comp is the one you win competing against yourself...IMAO

How's your band, Shoe Box in a Bucket, coming along?
Really Good! Keep checking our myspace! New music is on the way.

What kind of music do you listen to?
It depends on my mood, but lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Beenie Man, Bill Withers, Built to Spill, Pit er Pat and a little Killa Cam when I feel grimey.

What do you do when you're off the bike?
Listen to music, work, play music and whatever randomness the good times offer.

How do you pay the bills?
Right now I’m getting involved in Real Estate. My knee injury is preventing me from doing electrical work which is my primary source of income. But I can’t stay still, gotta do something or I’ll die of boredom. So, if you need a home, land, or just wanna invest I’m the man you need to talk to.

Favorite food:
Pelau, a Trini dish made up of brown rice mixed with pigeon peas, Trini style coleslaw and chicken drowned in gravy (I don’t like chicken ‘cause I’m black. Those BET comedians are liars). I also like Roti, you gotta figure that one out on your own.

What’s your favorite place to ride? Any other interesting spots you’ve seen?
The Banks, I guess. There are a lot of spots that I like to ride; it just depends on what boro I’m in at the time. Now about the second part to this question: nice try, my mental GPS refuses to put that kind of info on the web.

Do you usually ride with mountain bikers or BMX riders?
I ride with everybody. The bike a person rides has no meaning to me. Once you’re banging out moves you can roll with me.

How long have you been riding brakeless? What do you like about it?
I’ve been brakeless for almost three years now. It’s good ‘cause I’ve gained more control over my bike, and riding brakeless makes you learn tricks the right way. Plus rush hour traffic on a brakeless bike in NYC is like playing a real life videogame. CHyea!!!

Who do you usually ride with?
I ride with kids in my neighborhood. Darren, Jamaine, D-boy. I ride with Wormz whenever he’s out. All the Union locals turned Banks locals. Damn cops lol. And some dudes from BBR.

You’ve been off the bike for a while with an injury; what happened?
I was out riding with D-boy a.k.a. Andy, and Ricardo in Brooklyn getting some footy. We were on our way to the city, hittin’ up spots on da way, you know. We stopped at the Jewish Rail in Willy B, a thin square rail down a ten set. I just wanted to double peg it. I got on it no problem two times in a row but when I got near the bottom of the rail (no homo) my front dropouts would catch and over the bars I’d go, into a stunt man roll. So the third time I jumped at the rail, my front end was high and I landed feeble and sailed down the whole thing smooth...I was hyped, happy I was still alive, but unsatisfied with the fact that the feeble wasn’t on perpus. Ricardo wanted another angle so I was down to go for it again, but told him I wanted to pull the double peg first. So my dropout got caught up again on the double peg (lol). So I just said forget it and went for the feeble. Maybe it was meant to be or maybe I was going too slow but I went for the feeble, landed feeble but for some reason my front wheel rolled to the other side of the rail. I put my leg down to ninja style out of falling and that’s when my knee did some Elvis twist under my skin outta place. I knew something was wrong right away and pain and anger flowed through my veins like a Deuce Deuce three o’clock in the morning at a roof party in Williamsburg. I got home some how and my sis took me to the ER. I’m not letting this injury hold me down though. I’m staying busy and resting whenever I feel tired; I’ll be back sooner if not later. Time will tell.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Riding, living in a dope house with a dope lady and living life happily with peace of mind.

Where do you see the mountain bike scene at in 5 years?
I see big bikes getting a lot more recognition in the media, and from companies outside of the bike industry. Slopestyle is gonna grow, and more people will be on crossbreed (BMX/MTB) bikes like mine in the streets, trails, and bike/skateparks.

Last words?
Zaga zaga zow.... lol.... Thanks to all my fam, friends, sponsors, and media people like yourself for the support. And I’ll see you all in the parks, hills, and streets where bikes are not allowed sooner than you think. Peace.
