We had the chance to ride with Adam Hauck this past Monday and have brought back our best photos, video, and attempt at an interview for everyone. For our first interview, I think I could say it went pretty well, though we'll remember some important things like video tape and microphones in the future. Anyway, back to the focus of this piece -- Adam Hauck. We met Adam and a buddy, the mysterious S.K., at Sayreville's concrete park around 2. Fifteen minutes later, we decided to hit the road, as the douche of an old man who watches the place spotted Adam and S.K. without helmets.
Since we were looking to see how these guys rode, we followed them to a crazily out-of-place retaining wall behind a strip mall that looked fresh out of the latter half of Day of the Dead. Adam explained how the wall had been featured in a Dan's Comp catalog only seconds before gracing the wall himself. After playing around at the place a little bit ourselves, we pulled out the cameras and let Adam show us why he's pro (is that right?) and we're not.
After what may have been an hour or riding, we settled underneath the awning of an abandoned roller rink and had the interview. As my first interview, and with my limited knowledge of the pro scene, I stuttered through the questions Nick, Alec, and I had scribbled in the car. Fortunately, as those questions finished, Adam's personability allowed us to construct far more meaningful questions and conduct what may actually be considered a meaningful interview.
After seeing how much Burger King Nick could eat, we hopped onto the Parkway and followed Adam and S.K. to another skatepark that I will undoubtedly never find again for as long as I live. Another few hours of solid riding and we were ready to pack up. It was only then that we spotted a little grom cruising into the park on a trike bike. As Adam suggested that "The Jersey Trash" children had arrived, we watched them try to jump the wrought iron beast over the box jump. Then, for the final act, a band of social miscreants headed by a studded punker with a mohawk as tall as he was round crowded the park to see how fast one could drop into a quarter pipe on a lunch tray. While it was funny, it got old and we got tired. And that's where we parted ways. Check out the interview below and the short video edit.

NOTE: The video kind of blows since we've never conducted an interview before. No microphones = shitty sound. Live and learn. Sorry Adam...

Name and age:

Adam Hauck, 18 years old, New Jersey

Sponsors:

Black Market, Atom Lab, Deity, and Nike.

Describe your riding setup:

It's pretty simple compared to everybody else's. I just try to keep it simple and light. I try to keep it small because mountain bikes are huge.

Who is your biggest influence as far as ridng goes?

I don't know; Jeff Lenosky kind of helps me out in everything I do. He's kind of like my double-check guy. He's always been there for me. He just helps me out so I guess I'd say him.

Who else do you ride with?

Pretty much Jeff [Lenosky], [Aaron] Chase, my friend Brendan, S.K. Pretty much whoever is down to ride, I'll ride with.

You brought this dude down here today, so you've got to get his name in here, right?

S.K. man, just call him S.K. It's mysterious.

What else do you do besides riding?

I pretty much just hang out with my girlfriend or hang out with friends. Usually other bike related activities happen later, like riding road bikes.

So you're a roadie, wearing all of the spandex and stuff:?

Yea, tight spandex. No, just like bombing hills on some shitty road bike you find in someone's garage.

What sort of music do you listen to:?

Classic rock, hip-hop, and reggae.

What is your favorite riding style?

I was raised in more of an urban area, so street riding was always there. But that and park, always fun. I love hitting jumps too, so pretty much whatever, I'm down.

Do you ride downhill at all?

Yea, I ride downhill here and there. My bike's not together yet, that's taking forever, but it will be soon.

Do you race downhill?

I raced once last year and I did pretty well. I just wasn't here for many of the races at Diablo.

What's your favorite place to ride?

Ummm...favorite place to ride...Definitely Whistler. I'd say like Byrneside or FDR. I kind of like the ghetto ramps, like the weird transitions and all that stuff.

Did they give you shit for riding a mountain bike at FDR?

If you're on a bike at all, the skaters hate you.

The last time I saw you, you were getting ready to go to prom. How did that go?

[Laughs] Prom was good. Me and my girlfriend looked like pimps.

Top hats and canes?

No, no top hats; we were classy. They had mad good food there also.

If we hadn't called you to come out riding today, what would you be doing?

I probably would have gone riding in the morning and then gone to the beach 'cuz that's where my girlfriend is.

If you never set foot on a bike, where do you think you'd be?

Probably at some crappy job wasting my life away. I probably would have gotten more into sports; I'm kind of competetive. Or, I would have been in a Goldeneye for N64 world championship. [Laughs]

Do you have any plans for the summer or the upcoming year?

Yea, I'm going to Italy in like nine days to compete in...some RedBull contest, in Italy. It's like 40,000 Euros if you win. It's like 30 of the world's best riders. If you do good in that you qualify to go to Germany to go to that RedBull contest. It's pretty nuts. After that I'm pretty sure I'm going to Whistler in August, like West Coast and road trip up there. After that, I have no idea.

Where has riding taken you? Any sick spots you never thought you'd be?

Oh yea, I've definitely...like last year going up to Canada we stopped at so many rediculous spots. I've ridden at Corey Nastazio's house. Like who'd ever think they'd ride there. I've met so many people, like bmx and mountain bike, that you would never really think you could meet.

How would you say the scene has progressed in the past few years?

I guess there's like still those racer guys who hate the freestyle and 24's and singlespeed. It's going good though, people are shredding. It's just kind of about having fun, not more about bike setup. I've certainly gotten better and riding has definitely gotten way better. If you watch videos now from like three years ago you're like, "Oh my god." So now you see the changes, that's definitely good.

Since you've been competing and travelling a lot, do you still get to ride with the people you started riding with?

A lot of the guys I first started riding with don't ride anymore. Not too many peope in my town ride anymore. So I travel to meet people, whatever, ride by myself sometimes. Whoever I used to ride with that still rides, I ride with.

You getting wasted tonight?

Ummm...we'll see.
